Democracy may be the only social and political system to cope with current and future challenges while at the same time protecting basic rights and human dignity. However, democracies all over the world are under massive pressure: *isms (like populism, nationalism, etc.) are arising (again) as growing complexity supports the endorsement of ‘strongmen’. Globalization is predominantly met with skepticism while political leaders are increasingly focusing on national goals. Social media bubbles enforce a fragmentation of the public sphere.
