CodeX Digital Design Seminar Resilient (E-)Democracy

Digital Innovations Transforming Society and Economy

Resilient Democracy

Course description

Climate change, the rise of populism, social inequality and technological change are major challenges for the evolution of democracy today. They call for new approaches to government, politics, public sphere, welfare state and economy.

In the Digital Design Seminar (DDS) students from Humboldt University (HU) and Freie Universität (FU) Berlin address real-world matters along relevant themes in society and economy by applying digital design practices, research and tools. Furthermore, during the time of the project the students are supposed to implement prototypes of potential solutions as concepts and/or digital service(s) addressing relevant challenges. The challenge is to develop ideas for Resilient Democracies.

This project is carried out in close cooperation with the industry partner SAP and leverages advanced digital methodologies, technologies and platforms for prototyping.

In startup entrepreneur mode, DDS students will investigate the challenges of today’s democracies in detail, explore potential design principles for supporting resilient democracy and come up with design prototypes like pragmatic programs, concepts, and/or digital artefacts.

Learning objectives

  • Exploration of critical real-world design challenges
  • Learning and applying selected empirical, entrepreneur and design practices and tools

  • Understanding capabilities of advanced digital technologies and platforms and realizing prototypes
  •  Presenting and discussing team results with representatives from government, politics, enterprises

Course materials

Students will be provided with all necessary materials before each session online. Readings are available through the university’s electronic library resources or via the Internet. The materials to be used in this class provide students with both content and background for the topics introduced and discussed in the course.
Students are required to have a look at the mandatory material in order to allow for an efficient classroom experience. Optional readings are introduced as part of the lecture and provide students with the opportunity to extend their understanding beyond the material discussed in class.
For virtual team work e.g. in between the auditorium sessions virtual rooms are going to be proposed

Examination

Performance and results evaluation according to examination regulations: Written paper (approx. 5,000 words excl. references) plus interim and final presentation for each group. FU and HU students will separately provide a text with a reflection on interdisciplinary research processes (3 pages). Further information will be given in the kickoff event.

The final results are also going to be collected, discussed and potentially published on the website.

Experience

We have already done some great experiences in seminars like this one. In the summer term 2020 we had a Digital Design Project "New / REAL social media" in cooperation with the "Hochschule for economy and society" in Ludwigshafen which was a great success.
We invite you to check out our results!
